This is a dark red coloured ale with an aroma of toffee and plum fruits. This ale has a strong liquorice flavour with an extreme warming after taste reminiscent of a glass of whisky.

This is a Belgian Trappist trippel ale needing to be treated with respect. It should be accompanied by a strong cheese or good charcuterie. I had mine with a cold water buffalo sausage – excellent!

This is an ale that you will know you have drunk!

Peroni – Gran Riserva Puro Doppio

This is another of the Gran Riserva series from Peroni. Pura Doppio is a golden coloured ale, with a sweet aroma, with vanilla and sweet biscuit notes. It has a stronger hop bitterness from the start, carrying through to the finish and aftertaste, with a sweet malt backing.

Brewed by Wessex Brewery based near Warminster, Wiltshire on the edge of Salisbury Plain.

This is a dark red chestnut coloured ale, with the aroma notes of malt and prunes. The taste is rich in malts, plum and prune notes, with the warming backing of barley wine. This is a warming ale equally suited to winter and summer.

Brewed by the London Brewery this is a stable mate of the famous London Pride.

Peroni – Gran Riserva Rosso

This as a new ale from Peroni, adding to its Gran Riserva range. It is a red chestnut colour and a toffee vanilla aroma. The taste is malty but not a barley wine taste like the Malto Doppio, with a bitter hop finish. A pleasant strong ale.

This is brewed by Perino, now owned by Japanese Brewers Asahi Breweries.


Downton Brewery – Solstice 4.6%

Downton Brewery – Solstice

This is darker chestnut coloured ale with a malty sweet aroma. The taste is sweet with barley wine warming notes. It has a bitter follow-on and finish, although not particularly citrus-y.

This is a good bitter type ale from this Wiltshire brewery.

The brewery tasting notes say this premium ale is brewed with dark roasted malts and an array of hop flavours. It gives biscuity malt flavours with a citrus hot bitterness.

This is a bottle conditioned ale.

Scorcher IPA

Brooklyn Brewery – Scorcher IPA 4.5%

Brooklyn -Scorcher IPA

This is a golden coloured ale with an aroma of fresh green hops and resin notes. It has a strong hopped bitterness, with green wood notes, running through to the aftertaste.

This IPA is not as strong as some and its well hopped bitterness avoids excessive citrus notes. It is described by the brewery as a session IPA. This is a stable mate of the excellent lager from Brooklyn.

Morland Brewery – Hen’s Tooth 6.5%

Morland Brewery – Hen’s Tooth

This is a strong ale from the home of Old Speckled Hen. It is chestnut coloured with a strong rich aroma of malts. It has a good balance of rich and strong malty sweetness and hop bitterness, of a good English ale, albeit a strong ale.

This is a good strong ale, without the bitter sweet liquorice taste found in some darker strong ales. Morland Ales are now owned and brewed by Greene King.

This Devon ale is chestnut coloured with a malt aroma, with toffee. It has a good blend of a malty sweet and hop bitter taste, with a bitter follow-on.

This is a good ale in the style of an English bitter ale. It pleasantly lacks any hint of citrus-grapefruit, making a good drinkable ale.
