This is a Swedish dark red ale with a strong dried fruitcake aroma, which would be expected of English porter ales. It has a good heavy dried fruit or prune and malt taste, with the lighter bitterness of a lager.

This ale is produced by the lager method of bottom fermentation followed by cooling, normally down to about 4°C.
Of the two light and dark lagers offered by IKEA, this dark ale would be my preferred choice and is more suited to winter drinking

ÖL Ljus Lager is a golden coloured ale with those roasted malt aroma notes of the mash tun, which you experience passing a traditional brewery. It has a light sweetness with biscuit and roasted malt notes. The aroma and taste very much reflecting the aromas of the working brewery.

Whilst IKEA may not be ones first choice for real ale and many discount their beers entirely, the light and dark lagers do have some merit and should be tried to decide ones opinion.

Pivovar Herold – Black Lager

This is a dark brown – black ale, with a sweet fruity aroma. It comes with a rich sweet taste, with toasted malt notes.

This is a good dark ale with good aroma and taste notes and is a very long way from a mass produced light yellow coloured lager. Well worth trying out.
The lager is brewed in Březnice, south West of Prague in the Czech Republic.
